Note: Schubert used this lied as the theme for the last movement of his Trout Quintet. The violin part is comfortably playable in first through third positions, and can be played entirely in first. When played in first position, back extensions of the first finger to E# on the E string make it consistent with material found mid-way through Suzuki Volume 2. This arrangement has not been provided with fingerings, as it can be played entirely in first position. Alternative fingerings can be provided by the teacher, increasing the playing difficulty accordingly. I like to give this and other similar pieces to students whose fluency in the positions is developing and ask them to devise their own fingerings, taking musical considerations into account.

Skills: 2/4 time; G Major/B Minor; high position of third finger; back extension of first finger; portato (two per bow); slurs of 2 to 5 notes; occasional hooked bowings. Playing in higher positions optional.
