Title: Va, Pensiero (Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves), from the opera Nabucco

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi

Instrumentation: Two Cellos

Printout: 4 pages

Note: The creation of this moving lamentation of the Hebrews for their lost homeland came at a time when Verdi was grieving the deaths of his wife and two children. It is one of Verdi’s most powerful compositions, and so affected his audience that when he died, the throngs of people lining the streets as his funeral cortege passed by began spontaneously singing it.
