St Anthony Chorale (string quartet)

Title: St Anthony Chorale

Composer: Joseph Haydn, arr. David Gable

Instrumentation: Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello

Printout: 4 pages

Note: This chorale was used by Brahms in his famous Variations on a Theme by Haydn, and is therefore often misattributed to Brahms. For that matter, the attribution to Haydn is considered by many historians to be erroneous, and the actual author of the chorale remains a somewhat of a mystery. St Anthony Chorale can be an engaging prelude piece, a beautiful slow processional, or an evocative meditation or interlude. The violin 1 part is playable on flute or oboe.

More works by Haydn:

Andante for Musical Clock – 1772
Andante in C Major for Musical Clock
Minuet for Musical Clock – Der Wachtelschlag
Rondo all’Ongarese
