Minuet, from “The Gordian Knot Untied” (string quartet)

Title: Minuet, from The Gordian Knot Untied

Composer: Henry Purcell, arr. David Gable

Instrumentation: Violin 1; Violin 2; Viola; Cello

Printout: 4 pages

Note: According to legend, there was a complex knot in the Phrygian city of Gordium which an oracle had decreed could only be untied by whomever would rule Phrygia. Alexander (“the Great”) of Macedon, in his ubiquitous manner, drew his sword and sliced the knot in two. He then proceeded to conquer Phrygia and lands beyond. Both violin parts in this setting are playable on flute or oboe.
