Marche in D, from Cephale et Procris (violin cello duo)
Title: Marche in D, from the opera Cephale et Procris
Composer: Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, arr. David Gable
Instrumentation: Violin and Cello
Note: Born into a musical family, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre built a reputation as a virtuoso harpsichordist and a composer, especially of opera. Her music often incorporates unique twists, such as the six-bar phrases in this march. Cephale et Procris is a tragic opera based on a tale from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. It premiered in 1694, but was not a success, in large part owing to the declining public interest in opera during the reign of Louis XIV.
