Composer: Giuseppe Verdi, arr. David Gable
Instrumentation: Viola and Cello
Printout: 4 pages
Note: The Anvil Chorus, also known as the Gypsy Chorus, is one of Verdi’s most widely recognized pieces. It’s most famous passage is the eight-bar phrase heard about 2/3 of the way through (the second segment of the audio sample below), the point at which the choristers are singing to the accompaniment of hammers, anvils, and crashing chords in the orchestra.
The Anvil Chorus is also available, together with two other Verdi highlights, in the Bargain Bundle Verdi Favorites for Viola and Cello (viola cello duo).
