Rondeau, from Cephale et Procris (string quartet)

Title: Rondeau, from the opera Cephale et Procris

Composer: Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, arr. David Gable

Instrumentation: Violin 1; Violin 2; Viola.; Cello

Printout: 4 pages

Note: This charming rondo comes from the prologue to Jacquet de La Guerre’s only surviving opera. The composer creates textural variety by having the viola (violin 3 in the original instrumentation) carry the base line periodically. As in other works of the French baroque, the eight notes should be performed inégales.
