March of the Priests, from Athalia (string trio)

Title: March of the Priests, from Athalia

Composer: Felix Mendelssohn, arr. David Gable

Instrumentation: Violin 1; Violin 2/Viola; Cello

Printout: 8 pages

Note: It seems that Mendelssohn just didn’t have it in him to write foreboding or violent music; this “war march” is much in the same character as the Wedding March from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Athalia is a stage play by Jean Racine for which Mendelssohn composed incidental music. This march is the most frequently performed selection from that opus.
