Danza de Hércules (violin cello duo)
Title: Danza de Hércules
Composer: Tielman Susato, arr. David Gable
Instrumentation: Violin and Cello
Printout: 2 pages
Note: Tielman (also spelled Tylman) Susato was an important musical figure in sixteenth century Europe, being not only a composer but also a publisher and a collector of traditional dance music. Much of the latter he published in his Danserye, a collection which today is an valuable source of information on Renaissance era music. The Dance of Hercules uses one of Susato’s favorite devices: rewriting the material in a different meter. This arrangement ends with a statement of the original theme in the style of “divisions” such as might have been done in Susato’s time.
