Note: Although Alphonso X of Castile is often identified as the author of the Cantigas de Santa Maria (Songs of St Mary), he is rather the nobleman who ordered its compilation. The Cantigas is one if the most important sources of medieval monody. In this setting of Quen a imagen, the viola carries the original melody while the cello provides an obstinate-like underpinning.
