Notes: The evocative, jazz-like harmonies and ethereal melodies of Satie’s Gymnopédies make them popular with a wide range of listeners. This one, the first of the three, is the longest and best-known. The title comes from an ancient Greek dance, but Satie’s inspiration was probably found in the poetry and paintings of his impressionistic contemporaries.
