Composer: attrib. F. J. Haydn, arr. David Gable
Instrumentation: Violin and Piano or Organ
Printout: 2 pages
Note: The celebrated St Anthony Chorale is among the most mis-attributed works in the repertory. Some editions attribute it to Brahms, even though Brahms’ famous variations on the theme attribute it to Haydn. Many scholars disagree with Brahms, however, since the composer of wind ensemble piece from which he borrowed the theme was not identified. It is possible that the theme was composed by Pleyel, but we may never know for sure. Despite being called a chorale, St Anthony has no known lyrics and is suitable for performance at weddings and services of any denomination.
