Note: In the last decades of the seventeenth century, Gaspar Sanz published his magnum opus: Instruction in music for the Spanish guitar. Two and a half centuries later, Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo took themes from Sanz’s work and used them to create one of the best beloved guitar concertos in the repertoire, his Fantasia para un gentilhombre (Fantasia for a gentleman). This suite is drawn from the same sections of Sanz’s work, not replicating Rodrigo’s, but forming a new composition specifically for string trio. The suite downloads as two ten-page files: one with parts for violin 1 and 2, the other with parts for viola and cello. Violin 2 and viola parts are interchangeable.
